Plas Y Coed was built in 1887 in the Welsh Colonial style. As it is near a river it was flooded several times, but fortunately did not sustain serious damage. Some improvements and additions have been made over the years, but the main building with its façade is as it was then.

Many things are known to have happen during its existence, like the fact that it was the first dispensary in the town. However, in 1910, Dillys Owen moved in with her parents. The present owner’s grandmother, Dillys was also an entrepreneur and in 19…. she decided to start the first Welsh Tea Room in Patagonia, now a very popular tourist attraction much imitated throughout the region.

We have operated the tea room for four generations of the same family. We have kept the traditions, respected the house and its surrounding environment and the good home cooking and hospitality.

The garden was looked after by Dillys’ son, Gwyn Rees, who planted and tended to more than 250 rose bushes of different varieties, some 100 years old, until his passing in 1994. The rose in this, the oldest garden in Gaiman, remind us of his spirit. His wife, Marta Rees operated the house until recently. When she passed, her daughter Stella Rees inherited the house that is soon re-opening after some extensive maintenance and refurbishment. The manager of the house is now Ana, Stella’s daughter, and direct descendent of Dillys’, who recently spent some time in Wales putting in practice her Welsh language skills. We have kept the first Tea Room in Patagonia, and its traditions, for four generations
